If you are interested in learning about possible career paths in the Logistics Industry you will have many to choose from. Consider that the Logistics Industry includes four segments: Water, Air, Road, and Rail.
Each of these segments is composed of five sectors: Transportation, Logistics Support, Warehousing and Storage, Supply Chain Management and Safety and Security.
As you can imagine, there are numerous career opportunities in each of these areas. Below are examples of seven career pathways for your consideration. Transportation Operations - People and/or Freight
Transportation operations is the transportation operations functions within each major mode of transportation - air/space, rail, water, motor vehicle, and Transit Systems. These functions include the operation and support of mobile equipment in the movement of goods and people. They also include the operation of transportation facilities, distribution centers and related warehousing facilities. The operation of these facilities includes material handling and packaging and material management and inventory control. Transportation operations also includes the safety and environmental management functions carried out by companies within each mode of transportation. Some sample occupations in this pathway include.
Air/Space Transportation:
- Transportation operations managers, air
- Airplane pilots, flight engineers, flight attendants
- Airplane dispatchers and traffic managers/controllers
- Airport operations and support jobs
Rail Transportation:
- Transportation operations managers, rail
- Locomotive engineers and conductors
- Railroad brake, signal and switch operators
- Rail yard and terminal operations and support jobs
Water Transportation
- Transportation operations managers, water
- Captains, pilots, and mates
- Ship engineers
- Port/harbor/waterway/marina operations/support jobs
Motor Vehicle Transportation
- Transportation operations managers-motor vehicle
- Truck/bus/taxi dispatchers, traffic managers
- Truck drivers, bus drivers, taxi drivers/chauffeurs
- Truck/bus/taxi terminal operations and support jobs
Logistics Planning and Management - People and/or Freight
Logistics planning and management services refers to the planning, management and control of the physical distribution of materials, products, and people through one or more modes of transportation. This business function provides critical support functions to transportation operations and plays a critical role in supply-chain integration. This function overlaps with the accounting and purchasing functions, which are contained in the Business and Administrative Services career area. Some sample occupations in this pathway include.
- Logistics managers
- Logistics engineers, logistics analysts
- Logistics consultants, international logistics
Warehousing and Distribution Center Operations
Transportation/distribution facility maintenance refers to business functions involved in the maintenance of transportation and distribution facilities including ports, terminals, warehouses, and other types of facilities. These functions also play a critical support role for transportation operations. These business functions overlap with the maintenance functions within the Manufacturing, Information Technology, and Construction career areas. Some sample occupations in this pathway include.
- Warehouse operations managers
- Industrial and packaging engineers
- Traffic, shipping and receiving clerks
- Packaging/packing/material handling and moving jobs
Facility and Mobile Equipment Maintenance
Transportation/mobile equipment maintenance and servicing refers to business functions involved in the maintenance, repair, servicing, and refueling of transportation and mobile equipment including automotive and truck maintenance, aircraft maintenance and other types of mobile equipment maintenance. These functions play a critical support role to transportation operations in maintaining the reliability of transportation equipment. These business functions are also included in the Wholesale/Retail Sales and Service career area. Some sample occupations in this pathway include.
Facility:
- Facility maintenance managers and engineers
- Industrial equipment mechanics
- Industrial electricians, electrical/electronic technicians
- Other facility/terminal maintenance jobs
Mobile Equipment
- Mobile equipment maintenance managers
- Automotive/truck mechanics and body repairers
- Aircraft mechanics and repairers
- Rail locomotive and car mechanics and repairers
- Ship mechanics and repairers
Transportation Systems / Infrastructure Planning, Management and Regulations
Transportation infrastructure planning and management refers to the planning and management of the public transportation infrastructure including the planning and regulation functions carried out by federal, state, and local transportation agencies. These functions overlap with the regulatory functions within the Public Administration/Government Services career area. Some sample occupations in this pathway include.
- Urban and regional planners, civil engineers
- Government agency managers, regulators, inspectors
- Other federal/state/local transportation agency jobs
Health, Safety and Environmental Management
Health, Safety and Environmental Management refers to business functions involved in assessing and managing risks associated with safety and environmental management. Some sample occupations in this pathway include.
- Health and safety managers and engineers
- Environmental managers and engineers
- Safety analysts
- Emergency services jobs
Sales and Service, People and/or Freight
Transportation-related sales and service refers to business functions involved in the marketing and selling of transportation services to new customers as well as managing existing customer relationships, and providing customer service. Sales and service provides the critical customer-interface function for logistics services and transportation operations. Transportation-related sales and service overlaps with business functions within the Wholesale/Retail Sales and Services career area and the Hospitality and Tourism career area. Some sample occupations in this pathway include.
- Marketing and sales managers
- Reservation, travel and transportation agents/clerks
- Customer service managers and representatives
- Customer order and billing clerks
- Cashiers, counter and rental clerks
