Success Story

A Metropolitan Transportation Authority (a.k.a. MTA) of a major California city was struggling to fill open bus driver positions. The Authority sought the assistance of a participating CaTLI community college and a local WorkSource Center.  Working in close collaboration with the MTA, our CaTLI team is:

  1. Finding potential job candidates using WorkSource Center resources, contacts and experience.
  2. Pre-qualifying job seekers using MTA specific standards that include 10th grade English level, background checks and drug test.
  3. Training candidates using a curriculum that was co-developed with MTA and is taught by the community college.   The training includes familiarizing candidates with the MTA organization; bus driver’s responsibilities; customer service; work ethic, including on-time performance and preparation for work; teamwork; the power of a positive attitude; test taking/reading strategies, interview skills and critical thinking. (Note: Job seekers who were not able to demonstrate 10th grade English proficiency were offered the option of taking and passing a free community college remedial English course and reapplying for the job.)
  4. Delivering potential team members to the MTA before it has invested time and money in evaluating the job applicants.

Our experience has shown that this type of pre-employment training produces better prepared, focused and energized job applicants, resulting in improved hiring rates, retention and worker productivity compared to a typical new hire.

The program is a success and continues to help the MTA fill the ranks of its bus driver openings with well prepared, motivated employees.  In addition, because the community college and WorkSource Center had pre-existing logistics training grant funds, the program was conducted at little or no out-of-pocket cost to the MTA.

Finally, this opportunity to work at the MTA is for many low income workers a rare opportunity to join the ranks of the middle class and earn a good living for their families while enjoying a long career with attractive benefits that have previously been out of reach.
