Under the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MS&E) aims to foster a collegial atmosphere to produce:
(i) highly qualified students through an educational program that cultivates excellence;
(ii) novel and highly innovative research that advances basic and applied knowledge in materials, and
(iii) effective interactions with the external community through educational outreach, Industrial collaborations, and service activities.
To this end, the UCLA Engineering MS&E provides research labs and affiliated research groups, research centers for faculty, students, and industry, and the MS&E department members have research interests closely connected to the field of materials science and engineering. Currently, some research highlights in the department include:
- DOE Energy Frontiers Research on Molecularly Engineered Energy Materials
- New silicon-germanium nanowires could lead to smaller, more powerful electronic devices
“The blend of department faculty with research interests that are closely connected to the field of materials science and engineering including Bioengineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, provides a stimulating environment for interdisciplinary research and education.”
